| This study is based on four 1∶50000 regional geological survey (including Pengpu) in the northernsegment of the Liupanshan, Ningxia. Through geological profile measurements and geochemical sampling and analy-sis, the geochemical characteristics and spatial distribution of mudstone and shale in the northern Liupanshan aresystematically investigated. The results indicate that the mudstone and shale in the northern segment of the Liupan-shan are mainly hosted in the lower part of the first member of the Madongshan Formation of the Liupanshan Group.The mudstone-shale units are 30-100 cm thick, consisting predominantly of dark gray to grayish-black lithologies.They exhibit good lateral continuity in outcrop and contain abundant plant and animal fossil debris, including fishremains. The mineral assemblage is characterized by enrichment in authigenic minerals (calcite and dolomite) anddetrital quartz-feldspar components. The total organic carbon content of the mudstone and shale ranges from 0.55%to 8.95%. The hydrocarbon generation potential (S1+S2) varies from 0.45 to 16.12 mg/g, with an average of 6.34 mg/g.The kerogen type index ranges from .33 to 81.5, with an average of 28, indicating predominantly Type II-III kero-gen. The organic matter is enriched in hydrogen and depleted in oxygen. The pyrolysis peak temperature varies from426 to 473 ℃ , indicating a low level of thermal maturity and a predominance of oil generation. The oil contentranges from 0.2% to 4.5%. Mudstone and shale are exposed only within the Pengpu and Hongzhuang map sheets,and are absent in the Guyuan and Gucheng map sheets. Within the Pengpu map sheet, the strata occur in an NNE-trending, belt-like distribution around the Madongshan anticline, extending from Choushuigou through Shangtaozi-gou, Daxuenao, Miaogou, Tuolianggou, Sireangou, Tieshuiquan to Tianshuigou. The strike is NNE, with dip anglesranging from 36° to 47°. Within the Hongzhuang map sheet, the strata occur in a N-S-trending, belt-like distribu-tion along the Shuigou-Shuigouping-Haijiazhuang-Jianhezi-Kaichenggou area, with dip angles of approximately22° to 50°. The implementation and results of this project provide robust scientific data for the exploration and de-velopment of unconventional oil and gas resources in Ningxia, and identify two prospective target areas. |
